I have seen so many great works on this site with an erotic theme that I thought it would be a nice idea to have an exhibit at AMEA with the best works of ArtCrazed.com.

A group exhibit with one picture of each member and it would be nice if AtCrazed.com members would make the selection. Of course it is okay to suggest your own work, but on the condition you select a work of at least one other artist.

Any one willing to participate in a jury, please contact me!

Opening day of the Madame Tussauds wax museum in Berlin on Saturday did not exactly go off without a hitch. A visitor shoved a guard and another employee out of the way, then ripped the head off a wax sculpture of Hitler, right, The Associated Press reported. The man was taken into custody, and the statue was temporarily removed from display. The inclusion of a Hitler likeness at the attraction had drawn criticism in the German news media before the opening, but Madame Tussauds officials said they felt strongly that Hitler was an important figure in German history and should be included. The statue was cordoned off, and the display included a sign asking visitors to refrain from taking photographs or posing with Hitler, out of respect for those who died in World War II. Visitors are permitted to photograph and pose with the collection’s 75 other figures.

Their Newsletter:

Here we are, celebrating our 8-year-anniversary. This summer, Fifty One Fine Art Photography proudly looks back on what has been achieved so far.

Since the opening in 2000, the gallery has become the main reference for fine art photography in Belgium and has successfully entered the international art world. You can find us back on major art fairs such as Paris Photo and Photo London, as well as in internationally published magazines.

51.jpg

Today our range of carefully chosen artists, all of whom having their very own style and producing highly qualitative works, are receiving major recognition in the art world. Exclusively represented artists such as Malick Sidibé, has been rewarded the Hasselblad Award, the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale and lately the ICP award for lifetime achievement.

We have plenty of reason to celebrate and there is no better way to do this than by a festive thematic exhibition. Our exhibition will display ‘celebration’ in the broadest sense. All the joyful feelings we have are expressed through the cheerful and swinging photographs of Malick Sidibé, Frank Horvat, Jurgen Schadeberg, Philippe Koudjina, William Klein, Friederike von Rauch,…

We would be glad to welcome you at our anniversary exhibition and –drink on the 5th July from 13h-18h30 in order to share our happiness.

ArtCrazed.com member Sophi, one of my favorite artists here will be featured in the July/August issue of NY Arts Magazine and her works are currnetly on view at the Kinsey Institute Juried Erotic Art Exhibition through July 25.

A quote from the article:

When looking at art, is it fair to differentiate between what is erotic and what is not? Erotica is very personal, so trying to establish work as erotic is almost impossible. For example, in a Seurat study for The Echo, it is the curve of an arm and a hand raised to the mouth that is so erotic to me that I cannot look away, whereas Georgia O'Keeffe’s magnificent sexual flowers do not feel erotic to me at all.

SIX prominent Irish artists short-listed to compete in the 2007 Irish American Arts Awards in New York have withdrawn their names from the competition.

On Monday Noel Kelly, the director of Visual Artists Ireland in Dublin, stated that all six short-listed artists are no longer participating and are now seeking the return of their submissions.

The six artists are Cecily Brennan, Noel Brennan, Mark Garry, Conor McFeely, Corban Walker and Lee Welch. Kelly stated that his organization, Visual Artists Ireland, is now committed to helping the artists who supplied the short-listed submissions to secure the return of their works.

On Monday it was learned that not only do the six members seek the return of their submissions, they now wish to publicly disassociate themselves from the Irish American Arts Awards completely.

All six artists were short listed for their entries in 2007. However they expected the final awards — which was to have included a top prize of $25,000 — to have been made by now and so they are requesting the works be returned without delay.

An art exhibit focused on the “assassination” of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama drew attention from New York police, federal agents and the Secret Service.

A New York Times blog reports that 27-year-old artist Yazmany Arboleda attempted to set up the exhibit in a vacant storefront on West 40th Street in Manhattan with the title “The Assassination of Hillary Clinton/The Assassination of Barack Obama.”

Arboleda was able to display his work for all of 30 minutes before officials descended on the property, shutting the exhibit down.

As for its creator: he was led away in handcuffs.

Arboleda insists that the exhibit is not about a literal assassination, saying, “It’s art. It’s not supposed to be harmful. It’s about character assassination — about how Obama and Hillary have been portrayed by the media.”

“It’s about the media.”

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR MONUEXOTIC URBANISM

Ever since our cities became areas of continuous interaction and ever-expanding exchange the term “exotic” - understood as counterpart to the “local”, the “native” or even the “authentic” - has become a rather vague term. Who – in actual fact - is still able to distinguish between the one and the other, between the exotic and the local? Who would be interested anyway? Yet, once again, there seems to be an increasing fascination with, and interest in, importing and seeing certain urban elements from other parts of the world in our own cities. There are, apparently, more Japanese people visiting the fake Eiffel Tower in Las Vegas than the original in Paris. What makes this displacement so interesting today?

The fascination with the “exotic” and its appearance in our cities has a long history, although at first merely going in one direction: from the “West” to the “East”. Interest in the exotic by the Western World was first stimulated by trade with the Eastern World back in the 16th century. But right from the start there has always been this intriguing contradiction in the term “exotic” as being on the one hand associated with fantasies of opulence and barbaric splendour, yet on the other hand considered as integer, uncorrupted and tasteful. The charm of the unfamiliar with its thrill of menace hasn’t lost its attraction even today and has been turned into a global phenomenon that can no longer be discussed within the narrow-minded Orient – Occident dialectic. These days, all kinds of foreign urban elements evoke the atmosphere of far-off lands all over the world. A finish sauna can be as exotic in Sao Paulo as Islamic ornamental motifs on a building in New York City.

MONU#9 investigates what the term exotic actually means for our cities and how exotic urban elements appear, what they look like, and how they may influence our cities. In any case, exotic urban features appear more and more as an inexhaustible source for progressive urban design ideas. When the exotic influenced the appearance of the “Art Nouveau” at the end of the 19th century, it might today have the power to create an “Urban Nouveau”.

We invite daring concepts, mind-stretching speculations and ground-breaking new strategies about the topic “Exotic Urbanism” for our next issue of MONU. Submissions may be essays, photography, art projects or design concepts that trigger the term “exotic” in the urban context. MONU #9 will be published in the summer of 2008. Submissions or questions should be sent to info@monu-magazine.com by the end of June 2008. www.monu-magazine.com
